Dear Dr. Goldman:

	Enclosed is the report of my participation in the review of
Xerox Palo Alto Research Laboratory.
Besides what is in the report, I have some comments about the management
of the Laboratory.

	Getting suitable management for an industry research laboratory that
concentrates in information science is very difficult.  IBM has been
trying since 1958 and still has not fully succeeded.  Three qualities
are needed and have to be combined in differing degrees at the different
levels.  The first is simple management ability, and I don't know enough
about that to have specific comments.  The second is scieetific knowledge
in information science.  This is important, because
